Gardening with Kids
Reviewed by the Black Kow Garden Team · Updated September 2026Start by finding the sunniest spot in the yard. Six or more hours of direct sun is ideal, and three to six hours still works. With less than three hours, grow in pots on wheeled bases and move them during the day.
Step by step
-
1
Find the sun
Look for the patch that gets the most direct sunlight.
-
2
Start small
A few edibles or flowers in your existing yard is enough. It does not take much space or money.
-
3
Prep the soil
Mix Black Kow Organic Cow Manure Blend into the bed, or fill containers with Black Kow® Organic Outdoor Potting Mix.
-
4
Grow something to eat
Kids who grow vegetables are more likely to try them.
-
5
Save seeds in fall
Have kids collect seeds from favorite flowers and vegetables to plant next year.
Potting up a container
- Select a pot with a drain hole.
- Fill the pot 1/3 full with Organic Outdoor Potting Mix.
- Loosen the root ball and place the plant in the pot.
- Add more mix and press lightly.
- Water and let drain. Repot annually.
